Andrew David Summers

Andrew David Summers, 32, died accidently August 30, 2022 in Chicago, IL, where he resided since 2008.  Andrew was born on August 27, 1990 in Allentown, PA and grew up in Laurel, MD.  He graduated from DeMatha High School, Hyattsville, MD (2008), DePaul University, Chicago, IL with B.S. in Computer Science and Mathematics (2011), summa cum laude, and a M.S. in Computer Science (2013), and was employed as a Service Reliability Engineer at DRW, Inc., Chicago, IL.

Andrew was truly amazing and impacted everyone’s lives he touched; he was the best son, grandson, brother, friend and colleague.  Being extraordinary, brilliant and exceling at everything, Andrew built a computer at 14 years old, completed undergraduate and graduate school in 5 years, and was quickly recognized as an expert in his industry.  He was a lifelong learner and teacher and very passionate about technology as well as sharing that passion with others.  In his spare time, Andrew enjoyed playing video games, attending concerts, cooking, and supporting his favorite sports teams – Eagles, Sixers, Phillies and Flyers.  Having a genuine, loyal, and kind-hearted spirit, he regularly helped and mentored countless friends and colleagues.  Andrew had a big, beautiful smile and infectious laugh and valued engaging with his family, friends and his beloved dogs, Cameron and Tyson.  He will always be remembered and celebrated; this world is not the same without him.

I was / still am one of Andrew’s friends from DePaul’s computer science program. We used to hang out and go to concerts together. Andrew was a light in the world and a genius. I remember having wonderful discussions with him about artificial intelligence and software. He was an incredible engineer and computer scientist. I will never forget him. I had a dream the other day that he was steadily focused on a robotics project. He looked really happy and I think he is in a better place now.

I only today discovered and marveled at Andrew’s brilliant Elixir metaprogramming presentation to ChicagoElixir (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IwlCPs4n-I), then went to learn more about Andrew. I was shocked and deeply sadded to find this page! My condolences to everyone who knew and loved Andrew. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched and in his recorded presentations, which continue to teach and inspire people like me.
